The Method

The Eat the Weight Off Way

I did not find a secret and I am not selling you one. What I found was six things that were true whether I felt like it or not — and they are the same six things Burn is built on.

ONE

Real food, not rules

Protein first. Half-plate vegetables. Cut back sugar. Healthy fats.

That is the whole thing. Four lines you could write on an index card and stick to the fridge. No app to log every bite into, no foods that are forbidden, no week where you eat cabbage soup and call it a plan.

I thought losing weight was going to be a fight — against my appetite, against my own kitchen, against myself. It was not. It was four decisions repeated until they stopped being decisions.

TWO

Both. Not one or the other.

Strength training and cardio. Not strength when you feel like it, not cardio because it burns more today. Both.

This matters most for the people who are told it least. On a GLP-1 medication, a real share of the weight you lose is muscle, not fat — and resistance training is what keeps it. After weight loss surgery it is the same story. You can end up smaller and weaker at the same time, and nobody warns you.

So strength is not a bonus you earn once you are smaller. It is the thing protecting what you are keeping.

THREE

Start where your body is today

Not where it was. Not where somebody thinks it should be. Today.

I started in the water because my knees were bone on bone and it was the only place I could work hard without paying for it. A year later I was doing Zumba on land. Later than that, machines and an hour-long core class on the floor.

If a chair in your kitchen is where you can begin, begin there. There is no entry requirement and there is no line you have to be past before you count.

FOUR

Move wherever you will actually keep showing up

Your living room. A YMCA. A rec center. A pool. A sidewalk. The gym you already pay for and have not walked into yet.

The best program is the one you are still doing in March. If that is a water aerobics class down the road instead of a video on your phone, good — do that. Burn wins when you keep moving, not when you stay inside an app.

FIVE

Nobody gets cut

No leaderboards. No losing. Nobody is ranked against anybody.

Second attempt, fifth attempt — it does not matter here. Missing a day is not failing. Disappearing is, and even then the door stays open. You do not have to earn your place before you walk in.

SIX

You do not give up the food you grew up on

My food heritage is Louisiana and Texas — Creole and soul food. Every plan I ever tried treated that as the problem to be solved. Cut it out, replace it, eat something beige instead.

I did not do that, and I still lost 140 pounds.

Protein first, half-plate vegetables, cut back sugar, healthy fats works inside the food you actually eat and the kitchen you actually cook in. A plan that requires you to abandon your grandmother’s table is not a plan you will keep, and you should not have to.

If I Can Do It, So Can You

You do not have to be fit to start. You just have to start — and you do not have to do it alone.
